Keep Your Home Safe During the Holidays

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and many people will be planning to spend their holidays with family that may be living in another city or town. If you are planning to be away from home this holiday season, you would need to ensure that you are taking the right steps to secure your property, even if it’s only for a few days. Here are some tips that will help you keep your home safe during the holidays:

• Get someone to live there while you are away- This is one of the best ways to ensure your house is safe. You should try to get a trustworthy person you know (a relative/friend), to come and live there while you are away. If they move in temporarily, they would also probably be able to help with feeding the pets, watering the plants and picking up the newspapers every day.

• Get help from a neighbor- If you don’t want to, or are unable to get someone to live in your home when you are away, you can get a friend that lives nearby or even a neighbor to watch over your house. In case there is anything suspicious, they would be able to report it. You can request them to check on your house every other day when you aren’t there. You can also park your own car in the driveway; it looks like someone's at home.

• Taking care of the mail and newspapers- You can call the local post office and request them to stop your mail delivery for a few days, till you are back. The United States Postal Service offers this as a free service and is able to hold mail from 3-30 days. You can do the same with your newsprint and ensure that the service is stopped when you leave.

• Trim all overgrown shrubbery/trees- If you are very particular about how you maintain your property, and your premises starts looking neglected, it’s not difficult for anyone to identify that you aren’t at home. If you are planning on being away for more than a few days, you could either request a neighbor/friend to handle the landscaping chores or just hire someone to take care of it.

• Install light timers- When there is someone at home, cars drive in and out and the lights also go off and on; all this comes to a standstill when you are on vacation. However, you can easily create the illusion of your home being occupied by installing timers. These will automatically turn on and off the indoor lights at the preset times. You also have the option to install motion sensor lighting on the exterior of your home. This acts as a deterrent for trespassers and other unsavory elements.

Other things to do:

• Secure the ladders, lawn furniture, tools, and sheds • Remove any keys you have “hidden” outdoors • Put all your valuables in a home safe/safety deposit box that’s bolted to the ground • If you have any pet doors, secure those before leaving • Lock and secure all the sliding doors in case you have any in your home and lock every single door and window. Sometimes, pet owners leave a certain window open to allow easy access to their cat; however, this also becomes an open invitation to burglars. • Once you pull out , don’t forget to lock your garage door • Arm the home security system of your home.
